The Edgware Walker (Channel 4)
"For as far back as I can remember there was a man who would walk through my native
home-town of Edgware. Going through dustbins and picking up rubbish
he was noticeable for the fact that he only ever wore a pair of shorts
and a pair of dirty, old trainers...

"Many myths and legends surrounded the man. Some say he was a doctor,
others a brain-surgeon...

"Of all the legends one thing I know is true: come rain or shine
he would always be walking, only ever wearing a pair of shorts...
THE EDGWARE WALKER is the tale of how a simple “tramp” entered the heart, legend and folklore of a North-West London town and how his inevitable demise coincided with the decay of their own suburban dreamscape. His untimely death left a town in shock and with the awful realisation that all their town was now left with was Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pound Stretcher and a fucked-up bubble-gummed high-street rotting in the sick breeze of a new millennium. The Edgware Walker is a monument to an era of history that will resonate forever in the hearts and souls of all those who ever sailed on the streets, buses and kebab-shops of North-West London. (Running time, 20mins; Director, Lee Kern)
